French Bulldog DogHistory of the French Bulldog

A miniature Bulldog was developed in England and in the mid 1800s these dogs accompanied English lace makers who emigrated to France. In France the miniature Bulldog was crossed with local breeds, eventually producing the Bouldogue Français or French Bulldog. The French Bulldog first appeared in Britain in 1893 and the UK Kennel Club started to register the dog as Bouledogue Francais in 1905.

Appearance of the French Bulldog

The French Bulldog has a large, broad head with a wide and short muzzle. The face is wrinkled with the bottom jaw slightly undershot and turned up. The eyes are round and the ears are set high and carried erect. The body is compact and muscular with a deep chest. The legs are short and muscular with the back legs longer than the front legs making the rear of the body higher than the front. The tail is set low and carried erect. The French Bulldog has a short, fine coat and can be fawn, bridle, white and brindle. Although other colours exist such as black, white these are generally considered undesirable for the show ring.

Height of the French Bulldog

The French Bulldog stands 12 inches inches from the ground to the top of the shoulder.

Character of the French Bulldog

French Bulldogs are affectionate, playful, courageous, loyal, intelligent, quiet and well-mannered. They make exceptional family pets, being good with children. The French Bulldog is quick to learn although can also be stubborn at times when older.

Requirements of the French Bulldog

The French Bulldog requires moderate exercise. Although relatively easy to train this is best started at an early age before they develop any stubbornness.

Inherited Diseases of the French Bulldog

Due to their short nose French Bulldogs tend to snore and can be prone to breathing problems. The French Bulldog can be susceptible to heat stroke.

Lifespan of the French Bulldog

The average lifespan of the French Bulldog is 10 to 14 years.
