Labrador Retriever

History of the Labrador Retriever

The Labrador, or Labrador Retriever to use its proper name, is native to the St John's area of Newfoundland in Canada where it was used as a fisherman's dog. It is thought that this is the breed originally known as the St John's Newfoundland. In the 1820s the breed was imported into england where it was developed as a gundog retrieving ducks shot down by shooting sportsmen. In 1887 the Earl of Malmesbury named the breed the Labrador.

Appearance of the Labrador Retriever

The Labrador has a broad head, powerful jaws and ears which hang close to the head. It has a double coat consisting of a soft undercoat to keep dry and warm and a harder outer coat that helps repel water. The coat can either be Golden, Black or Chocolate. The body is strong with a deep chest and the tail is fat at the base and tapers to a point.

Height of the Labrador Retriever

The Labrador stands 21.5 to 23 inches from the ground to the top of the shoulder.

Character of the Labrador Retriever

The Labrador has an enthusiasm for life and is loving, good tempered, reliable, and loyal. They can be boisterous and clumsy as a puppy. They are happiest when with human companions and love to play and retrieve objects and can become bored if left alone. Their good temperament and intelligence makes them an ideal family dog, as well as being used as Guide Dogs for the Blind, Hearing Dogs, etc but they do not make good guard dogs.

Requirements of the Labrador Retriever

The Labrador needs a moderate amount of regular exercise and should be allowed to swim regularly as they love water. They require occasional brushing.

Health Problems Associated with the Labrador Retriever

Labradors can be prone to hip dysplasia, epilepsy and progressive retinal atrophy.

Lifespan of the Labrador Retriever

The average lifespan of a Labrador is 12 to 15 years.
