hi there i have a 9 year old labrador she has arthritus in her back legs she is bieng treated with metacam whitch helps a little over the last few months she has got very slow what can i give her to ease her pain and should i still give her reguler walks thanks sue
My dog is in a similar situation, I give her Glucosamine from Simply Supplements. They have a dedicated pet care range and my vet recommended that I give Glucosamine to her.
I feed my dog a food that has glucosamine in it to help with her arthritis. She was diagonsed with it before she turned a year old and will always have arthritis. She also had to have surgery in her hip where part of the bone was removed and will always have a bad back end. So when she turned a year old I swiched from puppy food to Eukanuba Large breed dog food which has glucosimine in it. I have found this food to be the best food for dogs with bone and joint problems, (next to prescrition foods).
It's sad but larger dogs have a shorter lifespan then smaller breeds, althought I have know some to live up to 20 years. She may not be able to run or play they way she once did. A walk should be alright as long as you keep at her pace and don't force her to go faster than she wants to. Watching her weight is important, if she is too heavy it puts more pressure on her legs and causes more pain. In all, just keep her happy.
InfiniteJest, were you thinking of clomicalm, clomipramine or amitriptaline as anti-anxiety medication? They are the most popular in Canada. Maybe your dog is on one of those and you thought Metacam when you saw the name of the drug. Just a thought.
