This is after the course of stuff that should have rid her of any parasites. So back we went to the vet this morning who has taken more samples and will do some investigating. I will hear from her this week some time.
She said it might be an ovarian cyst causing it. I have looked this up on Guinea Lynx and hair loss is one of the symptoms. Petal isn't showing any of the other signs though so I am hoping it isn't that, as that will mean surgery.
It's odd, the hair loss. It is coming away in little tufts, each tuft has a small flake of skin attached, the tufts are only a few hairs in each but in a definite clump. And her skin looks really healthy otherwise. It's not coming off her front half, just from about her middle to the back end.
Poor little Petal, she hates going to the vet and is almost paralysed by fear but at least this means she won't try to leap off the table. When the vet asked to see Smartie (who is perfectly healthy & fit) as a comparison, Smartie leaped about so much I had to make a corral with my arms to stop her from taking a flying leap.
We saw the same vet as last time, the one who keeps a lot of small pets herself, so I have every confidence that she will get to the bottom of this. But I'm still worried.

It does sound hormonal Sue but coming away in clumps sounds a bit fungal..has the vet checked for this just incase ? Was it Xenex that was used to treat the mites? She should be okay with that if mites were present , it is odd as you say.

Hopefully it won`t be ovarian or womb anything but I`ll tell you something worth trying and that is good old METATONE..Based on the `B` vitamins , it may help a lot if it`s a hormonal problem with her age.

Is she weeing okay ?...no blood?....hopefully the vet will soon come back to you with an answer but meanwhile the Metatone won`t hurt.

0.5ml daily for one week and 0.3ml thereafter....Good luck !!!

What a worry. I hope it is something simple!!
When you described the tufts with a tiny amount of skin, my brain went to fungal too. Time to call in Dr. House!!!!!

I don't know about female hormones in pigs (as I can't seem to break away from boars ) ... but will keep my fingers crossed that it's just a stubborn fungal issue and nothing more serious .

Hi Sue.....Just thinking.....Keep it in mind that she is a REX and they can be prone to skin problems .

I spoke to the vet yesterday, she has done some investigating and says she now thinks the problem is a skin problem. Jilly, I said I had heard they were prone to skin trouble and she said she had heard the same. She thinks it could be over-active sebaceous glands. I had a close look at a clump I got off Petal, and the 'tag' of skin was very greasy. There is something called Kerasolv, she says she can't find it available in UK, this is supposed to be very good for this problem, and she is trying to find its equivalent so we can give it a try.
At least Petal seems happy enough, she is not itching and she is eating like a PIG!

Well...That is good news I think..Don`t you ? I wonder if Neem Oil Lotion would help. It is excellent for skin and also treats fungal problems and parasites....That could be worth a try Sue. I have used it on my pigs before..Jasmine had a peculiar `patch` on her back and we tried everything .In the end I tried the Neem Oil and it worked wonderfully.

If you look it up on Google or similar it should tell you all about it and where to buy.

There is another cream called DERMISOL which is on vet prescription only...You could ask about that also Sue....Good luck !! I`m so glad Petal isn`t letting it bother her !! Wise , clever Piggy !!!!

I do have some Neem Oil, it's one of the ingredients in my fly repellent recipe (for the ponies really but I also use it on myself). It's a good suggestion, thanks Jilly. Will also ask about the Dermisol.
