As with any pet, keeping a guinea pig requires a commitment to care for it during its life which could be 4-7 years or longer. The commitment required to care for a Guinea Pig includes not only routine feeding, care and time spent with the guinea pig but also the provision of veterinary treatment if the guinea pig becomes ill which can be costly. Although proper care will go a long way to ensuring that any guinea pig remains happy and healthy there may still be times when prompt veterinary treatment is needed and once a guinea pig is ill it can deteriorate quickly. However, some insurance companies do offer veterinary insurance cover for guinea pigs.

Guinea Pigs can be kept outside or indoors and the decision as to where the guinea pig is to be kept will affect the type of Cage or Hutch required for the guinea pig.
