There are five species of hamsters commonly kept as pets. The largest and most common is the Syrian Hamster. Four species of dwarf hamsters are also kept as pets: the Dwarf Campbells Russian Hamster, the Dwarf Winter White Russian Hamster, the Roborovski Hamster and the Chinese Hamster (the Chinese Hamster is not technically a Dwarf Hamster but is often referred to as such due to its small size). Hybrid hamsters (the result of breeding the Dwarf Campbells Russian Hamster and the Dwarf Winter White Russian Hamster together) also exist in captivity and are found on the pet market.
