Hamsters : Rumanian Hamster

Rumanian Hamster

The Rumanian Hamster is similar in appearance to the Syrian Hamster and is of similar size (7-8 inches in length). The colouring is similar to the Golden Syrian Hamster in that the coat is brown with an almost white belly, and black cheekflashes. They have a more pointed face than most other species of hamsters.

In the wild the Rumanian Hamster lives in grasslands, cultivated and rocky steppes or bushy slopes and is found in Rumania, Bulgaria and North Russia.

They live in burrows throughout the year with several entrances, tunnels and chambers which they defend savagely against intruders.

Their diet consists mainly of grains and cereals.

They naturally breed between the Spring and Summer but will breed all year round in captivity. They are sexually mature at 8-10 weeks. The gestation period is 16-18 days with litters varying between 1 to 12 youngsters.

The Rumanian Hamster has been used for research in laboratories but is not known to be kept as a pet.
