Other Treats

There are a large variety of rat treats sold in pet shops and most rats relish these. Although these are designed for rats, they are designed as treats and should not be fed in large quantities to your rat. The overfeeding of treats which are high in sugar could lead to your rat becoming obese.

Other treats that can be fed to your rat include:

  • Biscuits
  • Boiled Potatoes
  • Bread (fresh or stale)
  • Breakfast Cereals (low fat)
  • Chicken (cooked)
  • Cheese (small amounts occasionally as fattening)
  • Currents
  • Dog Biscuits
  • Egg (scrambled or boiled)
  • Fish (cooked)
  • Mealworms
  • Meat (cooked)
  • Raisins
  • Sultanas
  • Toast

Never feed a rat any of the following:

  • Chocolate
  • Garlic*
  • Onions
  • Rabbit Mix (containing antibiotic ingredients)
  • Raw Kidney Beans
  • Sweets
  • Toffee

*There is much evidence to suggest that garlic can be beneficial to health but there is also some evidence to suggest that an overdose of garlic could be harmful. Therefore although it may not be strictly dangerous to feed to rats its effects on rats is not completely known.
